| Offenders Required to Register: |
Convicted of a sex offense after July 1, 1997, the statute's effective date,
must register with State Police - Bureau, sheriff's office and police
departments. Committed a sex offense on or after June 18, 1992, must register
with sheriff's office and police departments. Committed a sex offense prior to
June 18, 1992 or if in custody of Department of Public Safety and Corrections on
or after June 18, 1992, must register with sheriff's office and police
departments. Additional notification required for offenders with victims under
the age of 18. |

Name and any aliases used by the offender; Address of offender's place of
residence upon release from confinement; Crime for which the offender was
convicted which gave rise to the requirement to register and entire criminal
history; Date and place of conviction; SSN; Photograph; Fingerprints; Other such
information as may be required by the Department of Public Safety and
Corrections to carry out the purposes of this law. |

| Verification of Address: |
The registered offender's address is verified annually by the Bureau by
mailing a nonforwardable verification of address form to the offender's last
reported address. The offender has ten days to complete the verification form
and return it to the Bureau. The address of sexually violent predators shall be
verified every ninety days following receipt of initial registration. |
| Penalties for Non-Compliance: |
A person who fails to register as required by law shall be fined not more
than $1,000 or imprisoned for not more than one year, or both upon conviction.
Upon a second or subsequent conviction, whoever fails to register as required
shall be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than three years without benefit
of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence. If the offender is on released
supervision, failure to register or verify address may also result in revocation
of his probation or parole. |
| Access to Information: |
Citizens may make a public record inquiry to the local law enforcement
agencies or to the Register. In addition, individual citizens may be informed
directly through community notification provisions that require the offender to
give notice of the crime for which he was convicted, his name, and his address
to at least one person in every residence or business within a one mile radius
of his residence in a rural area and a three square block area in an urban or
suburban area; as well as to give notice to the school superintendent (see
above); to the landlord, lessor, or owner of the residence or property where he
will reside; to publish notice twice in the official journal of the governing
authority of the parish where he will reside; and to give any other notice
deemed appropriate by the court or the Parole Board. |
